How to find your perfect tan shade

I’m sure you’ve heard people mention green based tans and violet based tans, but what does that all mean?

When it comes to tanning, it is important to know your skins undertone. Knowing your undertone will help you pick the correct colour tan to neutralise your skin and give you the best tan possible. There are three undertones you could be; warm (golden/yellow/peachy tones), Cool (pink/red/blueish tones) or neutral (a mixture of both warm and cool tones).

Tanning solutions use the colour wheel to colour correct the undertones in the skin to achieve the best possible tan. This is done using a type of colour scheme called complimentary colour. Complimentary colours are two colours that are on the opposite side of the colour wheel from one another. When you mix colours on the opposite side of the colour wheel they neutralise one another. This is perfect for colour correcting in the skin.

In the example of tanning solutions, we refer to Green and Violet on the colour wheel.

Green is the opposite to red/pink on the colour wheel, meaning it has a neutralising effect on the pink/red tones within the skin. If your skin is cool undertoned, green based tans are perfect for you.

Violet is the opposite to yellow on the colour wheel, meaning it has a neutralising effect on yellow/olive undertones within the skin. If your skin is warm undertoned, violet based tans are perfect for you.

If you are a neutral undertone, you can rock both violet or green based tans.

Knowing your undertone is also super helpful for picking foundation and concealer shades too.

Here’s how you can work out what your skin undertone is.
